Peter’s parents were Jewish, and he went to the Hackley School, from which he matriculated in 1965, then continued his education at Northwestern University, and graduating four years later.

Soon after college, Peter’s career started with a role in David’s Miller Golden Globe Award-nominated “Hail, Hero!” (1969), starring Michael Douglas, Arthur Kennedy and Teresa Wright. He then continued with supporting roles in westerns “Soldier Blue” (1970) and “The Man Without a Country”, next to Cliff Robertson and Beau Bridges. In 1976 he was cast in the role of Rudy Jordache in the TV series “Rich Man, Poor Man” (1976), and also portrayed Wylie in the film “The Last Tycoon”. The following year he starred in the Richard T. Heffron’s biographical drama “Young Joe, the Forgotten Kennedy”, and then played Larry ‘Rain’ Murphy in Michal Mann’s “The Jericho Mile” in 1979, all of which increased his net worth by a large margin.

Peter started the ‘80s with the lead role in the film “Angel on My Shoulder” (1980), and continued with the lead role in the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated drama “A Whale for the Killing” (1981), and then lent his voice to Justin from the animated film “The Secret of NIMH” (1982). In 1985 he played Dick Diver in the mini-series “Tender Is the Night” (1985), and in 1989 played Peter Gunn in the film of the same name.

Nothing changed for Peter in the early ‘90s, as he continued to appear in films, preferably those made for television directly, such as “83 Hours ‘Til Dawn” (1990), “Trial: The Price of Passion” (1992), “Men Don’t Tell” (1993) – which received a Golden Globe Award nomination – then “The Yearling” (1994), and “Texas Justice” (1995), with Heather Locklear and Dennis Franz.

From 1996 until 1997 he portrayed Dr. Nicholas Moloney in the TV series “Moloney”, and then in 1998 played Dr. Sam Sheppard in the film “My Father’s Shadow: The Sam Sheppard Story”. He finished the decade with the role of La Hire in the highly-praised mini-series “Joan of Arc”, starring Ted Atherton and Jacqueline Bisset, which also added to his net worth.

Peter started the new millennium with the lead role in yet another television film, “A Father’s Choice” (2000), with Michelle Trachtenberg and Mary McDonnell, and then in 2002 portrayed Dr. Isaac Braun in the TV series “Body & Soul”. In 2005 was cast as President James Sanford in the film xXx: State of the Union”, with Willem Dafoe, Samuel L. Jackson and Ice Cube. In 2007 he featured in the romantic comedy “License to Wed” (2007), while in 2010 he appeared in the film “Jack’s Family Adventures”, then had a break until 2014, when he was selected to play Grant in the film “Sugar Daddies”, and most recently, he featured in the romantic drama “Drawing Home” (2017), starring Julie Lynn Mortensen, Juan Riedinger and Kate Mulgrew.

Regarding his personal life, Peter has been married to actress Rachel Ticotin since 1998. He has two divorces behind him; his first wife was Beverly Baker Paulding, and their marriage lasted from 1973 until 1979. In 1983 he married Nicole Fons, with whom he had two children, before divorce in 1994.
